Open the Dialogue
A Substance Abuse Awareness Series for Caretakers of Children Grades 5-12 and Beyond
A Substance Abuse Awareness Series for Caretakers of Children Grades 5-12 and Beyond
This series of talks is dedicated to opening the dialogue concerning the drug epidemic that is plaguing our communities. Open the Dialogue’s mission is to facilitate a dialogue among caretakers with children in grades 5-12 and beyond. Our hope is that through this four part series, our communities can begin to eliminate the stigma that is the hallmark of this national emergency. Perceived stigma is a major barrier to seeking help (National Association of Drug Court Professionals, 2016). In addition, Open the Dialogue’s speakers will be prepared to provide information and resources to families in need.
The statistics are heartbreaking: Pennsylvania has the fourth highest rate of death in the country due to drug overdose (CDC 2016). Fatal overdoses rose thirty-seven percent across PA in 2016 (University of Pittsburgh 2016). Lackawanna County is ranked in the top twenty-five percent of PA overdose deaths (University of Pittsburgh 2016).
The four part series is balanced with prevention education experts, medical experts, legal experts, recovery professionals, and people in recovery. Featured speakers include: Lackawanna County President Judge Michael Barrasse, Clearbrook Treatment Centers - Joe Kane, The Wright Center - Scott Constantini, Pharmacist and Advocate - Thomas DePietro, Voluntary Action Center - Jeffrey Thomas, Coroner - Timothy Rowland and EOTC Family Therapist - Emily McDonald
Coroner Timothy Rowland states, “To stop this epidemic, we need parents of young children engaged in prevention.”
We don’t have all of the answers, but opening the dialogue is the key to eliminating the stigma surrounding substance misuse and finding the answers as a community.
